Present status of mushroom cultivation

Mushroom cultivation is becoming an important small-scale agribusiness and livelihood activity in India. It is particularly attractive because it requires relatively little land, can be undertaken indoors, and can convert agricultural residues such as paddy straw into a marketable food product. ICAR describes oyster mushroom cultivation as a potential additional-income activity using locally available resources.

The sector is also receiving increasing institutional attention. In June 2026, ICAR and Assam Agricultural University jointly organized the All India Coordinated Research Project–Mushroom workshop in Guwahati, where researchers and policymakers discussed sustainable production, spawn availability, specialty mushrooms, value addition and farmer livelihoods.

For Assam and Northeast India, there is considerable potential. The Government of Assam includes mushroom cultivation within its horticulture sector, while current discussions in Assam emphasize improving spawn availability, cultivation technology and value-added mushroom products.

Why is mushroom cultivation suitable for students?

A student does not necessarily need a large farm or large capital investment.

A small mushroom enterprise can start with:

- a small room or shed,

- locally available agricultural waste,

- good-quality spawn,

- basic cultivation equipment,

- knowledge of hygiene and environmental management,

- and a local market.

ICAR recently reported that, under suitable conditions, approximately 500 oyster mushroom bags could be considered for a small enterprise targeting around ₹12,000 monthly net income, using roughly 150–200 sq. ft. of cultivation space. This is an illustrative enterprise figure, not a guaranteed income; actual returns depend on yield, contamination, input costs and selling price.

The bigger opportunity: don't sell only fresh mushrooms

This is where I would strongly encourage students to think like entrepreneurs.

They can develop a complete mushroom value chain:

Spawn → Mushroom production → Fresh mushroom → Dry mushroom → Mushroom powder → Pickle → Soup mix → Snacks → Ready-to-cook products → Packaging → Branding → Marketing

ICAR specifically highlighted value-added mushroom products as an important opportunity for improving income and livelihoods in Northeast India.

Future prospects

The future is not limited to growing mushrooms.

Students can develop businesses in:

1. Commercial mushroom production

2. Spawn production

3. Mushroom processing

4. Mushroom-based food products

5. Packaging and branding

6. Online/direct marketing

7. Training and consultancy

8. Mushroom-based startup enterprises

9. Agricultural-waste recycling

10. Research and development of specialty mushrooms

There is also scope for premium mushrooms. For example, ICAR recently reported successful cultivation of King Oyster mushroom in Arunachal Pradesh, showing potential for specialty mushroom production in the Northeast.

A powerful message for students

“Don't always look for a job. Learn a skill that can create a job.”

A student who learns mushroom cultivation can begin as a producer, then become an entrepreneur, and eventually become an employer.

The important transformation is:

Student → Skill → Small production → Income → Enterprise → Employment

But tell students about the challenges too

We should not present mushroom cultivation as "easy money." Successful cultivation requires:

- quality spawn,

- proper hygiene,

- contamination control,

- temperature and humidity management,

- production planning,

- reliable markets,

- proper packaging,

- and knowledge of business management.

Recent ICAR training programmes have particularly emphasized quality spawn, environmental management, contamination control, processing, value addition and market linkage as critical factors.

A good concluding message for your speech

“Dear students, mushroom cultivation is not simply about growing a fungus. It is about converting knowledge into a product, a product into income, and income into entrepreneurship. You may not have large land holdings or huge capital, but you have something much more valuable—education, technology and the ability to learn. If you acquire the right skill, start small, maintain quality and learn marketing, mushroom cultivation can become a pathway from student life to self-employment and eventually to job creation.”
