 Definition: A garden may be defined as a place for growing plants, exhibits various forms of plant life, which are consciously directed for ornamental or practical use or both.

Landscape gardening: Arrangement of trees, shrubs, climbers and various other plants together with the building, walks, drives, artificial and natural features for the use of humanity is termed as "landscape gardening".

Landscape architecture: It is the art of arranging land and landscape for human use, convenience and enjoyment.

Design: Design is the determination of the character of an object to serve a certain purpose known in advance. It is two types as follows-

i) Aesthetic designing: It is attractive and pleasing in appearance,

ii) Economic design: Economic design is meant to serve some practical and utilitarian purposes.

Types of Garden

Gardens are basically divided into two types- i) Formal Garden and ii) Informal Garden

i) Formal Garden- In such garden types all the entities are arranged symmetrical manner in a balanced mode- such as sharply defined edges, straight lines of planting, clipped hedges, man made levels and retaining walls. 

ii) Informal Garden- Informal gardens are assymmetrical with intelligent melting and merging points where planting is done in free flowing contours on curved lines and clipping is almost avoided.
