What is an ABC Account?

An ABC account refers to an account in the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) system, an initiative by the Government of India under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and managed by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The ABC is a digital platform that acts as a centralized, virtual storehouse for the academic credits earned by students throughout their educational journey. Each student receives a unique 12-digit ABC ID (also known as APAAR ID), which serves as their digital academic identity.                     You may read this in Assamese

It is mandatory to create an ABC account in order to get admission into undergraduate (UG) courses after completing school education. Therefore, before standing in the queue on the day of admission, a student must have an ABC account, which will be verified by the institute where admission is being sought.                    Click here to create ABC account

Why is an ABC Account Needed for Students?

An ABC account is essential for students for several key reasons:

1. Credit Accumulation and Transfer

  • Students can accumulate credits from various recognized institutions in India. These credits are stored securely in their ABC account.
  • The credits can be transferred between institutions, meaning students can switch colleges or universities without losing their academic progress.

2. Flexibility and Mobility

  • The ABC system enables students to enter or exit academic programs at multiple points. If a student needs to pause their studies, they can redeem their accumulated credits for a certificate or diploma, and later rejoin the same or another institution to continue their education.
  • This flexibility supports personalized learning paths and interdisciplinary education, as students can choose courses from different institutions and accumulate credits towards their desired qualification.

3. Simplified Verification and Record-Keeping

  • Academic achievements are stored digitally, making it easy for students, institutions, and employers to verify credentials without physical paperwork.
  • The ABC account is linked with DigiLocker, a government-approved digital document storage platform, further simplifying access and sharing of academic records.

4. Transparency and Accountability

  • The ABC platform provides a transparent and centralized record of a student's academic journey, ensuring all achievements are recognized and authenticated across institutions.

5. Empowerment and Student-Centric Education

  • By giving students control over their academic credits and allowing seamless transitions between institutions, the ABC system promotes a more student-centric approach to higher education.

How to Create an ABC Account

Students can create their ABC account through platforms like DigiLocker or the UMANG portal. The process involves:

  • Signing up or logging in to DigiLocker or UMANG
  • Providing personal and academic details (name, date of birth, institution, etc.)
  • Generating and downloading the unique ABC ID document
