The Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), Government of India, has undertaken several major initiatives to promote artificial intelligence, digital inclusion, and technological innovation in the country. Two important initiatives highlighted are IndiaAI and Bhashini.
1. IndiaAI Mission
The IndiaAI Mission follows a mission-centric approach aimed at developing a comprehensive and cohesive artificial intelligence ecosystem in India. It seeks to address key gaps in areas such as:
- Computing and AI infrastructure
- Availability and accessibility of quality data
- AI financing
- Research and innovation
- Targeted skill development
- Institutional capacity building
The overall objective is to maximize the potential of Artificial Intelligence for India's technological and socio-economic development.
The IndiaAI Mission has a proposed budgetary outlay of ₹10,372 crore for a period of five years. The mission also provides substantial support for AI start-ups, including an allocation of ₹2,000 crore to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the AI sector.
2. Bhashini
Bhashini is a language-translation initiative of MeitY designed to overcome language barriers among India's diverse linguistic communities through the use of technology.
The key objectives of Bhashini are to:
- Reduce language barriers between different Indian languages.
- Enable citizens to access digital initiatives and services in their own languages.
- Promote digital inclusion by making technology more accessible to people across linguistic backgrounds.
- Facilitate real-time translation and transcription across 22+ Indian languages.
Conclusion
The IndiaAI Mission and Bhashini represent important steps towards building an inclusive and technology-driven India. While IndiaAI focuses on strengthening the country's artificial intelligence ecosystem, infrastructure, research, skills and start-ups, Bhashini focuses on language accessibility and digital inclusion. Together, these initiatives have the potential to make advanced digital technologies more accessible and useful to citizens across India
