Sericulture involves four distinct phases namely-
1. host plant cultivation
2. silkworm rearing
3. reeling
4. weaving
Base on quality of silk and types of host plants, silk moths can be classified into two different groups-
A) Mulbery Silk work:
larvae of this moth is consume mulbery plants and silk produced by them is called mulbery silk.
The important species of this group is Bombyx mori belong to the family Bombycidae.
B) Non-mulbery silk worms:
The larvae those consume non-mulbery host plant is called non-mulberry silk worm. They are-
a) Muga silk worm
SN- Antheraea assama, family- Saturnidae
b) Eri silk worm
SN- Philosomia ricini, family- Saturnidae
c) Tassar Silk worm
SN- Antheraea paphia, Family- Saturnidae
