What Do Facebook Users Really Want?

Understanding Viral Posts Through Psychology, User Behaviour, and Platform Algorithms

Abstract

Facebook has evolved beyond a social networking platform into a digital ecosystem that reflects human psychology and social behaviour. A common observation is that many educational, scientific, or socially valuable posts receive limited engagement, while simple personal photographs with little or no meaningful message often attract thousands of reactions and comments. This article examines the psychological, sociological, and technological factors behind this phenomenon.

Emotion Outweighs Information

Most Facebook users visit the platform not to acquire knowledge but to experience emotions, entertainment, and social connection. Consequently, posts that evoke happiness, curiosity, nostalgia, or empathy within a few seconds tend to receive significantly higher engagement than information-rich posts requiring careful reading and reflection.

The Facebook Algorithm Rewards Engagement

Facebook does not evaluate the academic or social value of a post. Instead, its recommendation system primarily measures behavioural signals such as:

  • Reactions and likes
  • Comments
  • Shares
  • Viewing time
  • Conversation generated by the post (Figure 1)

Posts receiving strong early engagement are distributed to a wider audience, creating a self-reinforcing cycle that increases their likelihood of becoming viral.

The Power of Human Faces and Positive Visuals

Research in cognitive psychology demonstrates that the human brain is naturally drawn to faces and emotional expressions. Portraits, smiling faces, travel photographs, family moments, and aesthetically pleasing images capture attention quickly and therefore generate greater interaction.

Social Validation Rather Than Content Evaluation

A Facebook "Like" is often a social gesture rather than an assessment of content quality. Users frequently engage with posts because they know the author, wish to maintain relationships, or expect reciprocal interaction. Thus, engagement reflects social bonding as much as content appreciation.

Implications for Educators and Researchers

The challenge for educators is not the quality of their knowledge but its presentation. Scientific and educational information can reach a broader audience when combined with compelling visuals, storytelling, relatable experiences, concise language, and interactive questions that encourage participation.

Conclusion

The popularity of Facebook posts is influenced far more by emotional appeal, visual attractiveness, social relationships, and algorithmic amplification than by the intrinsic quality of the information presented. This does not imply that meaningful content lacks value; rather, it suggests that valuable knowledge must be communicated in emotionally engaging and visually compelling ways. In the digital age, successful science communication requires not only evidence but also storytelling, simplicity, and human connection.
